Welcome

This blog is about sports cards. I tend to only purchase cheap items so don't come hear expecting to see big money cards. My teams collections are Chicago White Sox and Michigan Wolverines. I also have a bunch of player collections.

Cards from Big Hoss

A couple of Friday's ago, Fred (LCS owner), Kevin and I drove out to Big Hoss Cards & Collectibles in Warsaw (about 45 minutes away). Jason (owner) is a good friend and we try to run down there occasionally to support his shop.

Kevin and Jason were working out a fairly big deal while I was looking through some cheaper cards. I pulled out a small stack and was waiting on them to finish. While they were going back and forth on a price (which was between $400 and $500) I just sifting through cards and looking since they were more than I wanted to pay. I already had a small stack I was going to ask about, I narrowed it down to player collections since I really could have bought a bunch of them. Just as they were closing in on a price, I slid my stack over and said "and throw these in?" He said, sure. So I got the below on the house.

I pulled this out since it is a PC collection. It's a 1975 Hostess, the crappy cut job doesn't bother me so much. It's my 198th card of Yaz.

With adding this 1976 Topps, I'm only short his 1975 and his rookie (1973) of having all his base cards from his playing days. Although, technically, his rookie has multiple players on it so I wouldn't consider it part of the list. This is my 363rd card of Schmidt.

I need the lefties 1971 and 1976 to complete his run through the 70's with this addition. It also gives me 234 cards of Carlton.

I didn't even realize I didn't have this card. I've probably ran by it a bunch of times and didn't grab it thinking I did. Since I had some time, I actually took the time to look it up and sure enough, I needed it. This card gives me 584 cards of Seaver.

I picked out 5 different White Sox cards from the 1957 Topps set and ended up only coming home with this one. I have 14 cards from this set now, 9 of them were White Sox. There's still 14 I don't have from the team set but apparently he didn't have any of those.

Last but not least, this was in the cards that were priced above my budget but I knew he'd give me a deal so I threw it in as well.

I picked up this Kaleidoscope Orange auto of Mazi Smith. He had $10 on it, I thought it was a little overpriced but like I said, I knew he'd give me a deal. Wasn't expecting free but I'll take it. On the way home, I was showing it to Kevin and realized it was #'d /2. No wonder it cost more.

Plymouth Pickups

Geez, I didn't realize how far behind I was. Yesterday we did the Fort Wayne show. Last weekend we did the South Bend Show and the Saturday before that we did the Plymouth show. Which is what I'm showing today. I need to get my crap together.

First off, Jeremy who is a long time friend in the show scene. We met him at the very first show I set up at. His work schedule hasn't allowed him to do very many anymore but he popped into the show that Saturday. He brought me this card, I was pretty sure I had it but I try to always check if I have the time and I didn't. I had another variation of it. He just said I could have it.

I went through Corey's $1 box who was set up next to us. I wasn't planning on buying anything but the end of the shows always get a little slow and I get bored. I found all of these in there. Always like getting a new Scotty Pods and I liked Burger when he was here so I usually grab his Sox cards as well. The bottom 3, I have a bunch from that set so I grabbed a few that I didn't have.

  • Scott Podsednik - 35 cards
  • Jake Burger - 44 cards
  • Jonathan Stiever - 10 cards
  • Lance Lynn - 18 cards
  • Hoyt Wilhelm - 15 cards

I also picked up another Cronenworth and Zimmerman that I didn't have. I wasn't sure about the Zimmy but I didn't have the sparkle.

  • Jake Cronenworth - 86 cards
  • Ryan Zimmerman - 403 cards

He also had this 1973 Topps mixed in with all that new stuff and I happen to need it for my set.

  • 1973 Topps - 83% complete
All of the above and the card on the right below all came from the $1 box. How much did he charge me for all that. $3. I'm telling you, it pays to make friends at these shows.

Corey said he had the card below in his showcase so I had to look, then I also saw the other card above. I love the Black Chrome Sox cards with black being one of our team colors. They look so great so I couldn't turn that card down.

  • Andrew Vaughn - 112 cards (my 2nd auto)

While I was going through his $1 box, he told me he had a Konerko auto. I was really hoping it was one I already had so I wouldn't have to buy it but it wasn't. This jersey/auto is also seriel #'d /25. The price tag on this card was $25 and the Vaughn auto was $10. He gave them both to me for $25. So much for not spending any money at this show.

  • Paul Konerko - 783 cards (6 autographs)
I don't do so good at not spending at card shows.

Sorting Pickups and more

We set up at the Fort Wayne show today and yes, I purchased a few cards and got a few for free but you'll get those once I catch up.

Today, you're going to see cards that I got from my LCS from sorting and from visiting when I was dropping off the sorting.

I got all 3 of these while sorting. The boxes I did were mostly older stuff (the Perry) with a little bit of newer stuff (Hill & Livers). I did quite a few boxes and that was all I got (which is fine).

When I went in to drop the sorted cards and pick up more, Fred gave me a few cards to see if I need. There were a couple of Sox cards but this Dylan Cease was the only one I needed.

Fred remembered that I pulled a Kobe Bufkin relic from one of the sorts so he threw these aside for me as well. I didn't have to pay for them, he said I could keep them for sorting for him.

As I was looking around, I noticed a ton of autographed mini helmets, he said he bought a collection from someone who was collecting all the Heisman winners, plus there were some oddballs. There were 2 Michigan helmets so I was looking at those. I told him I'd take the 1 because it was cheap but I was debating on the other one. After awhile, I said damn it, what do you want for the other one.

The helmet on the right has 2 signatures, Jake Ryan and Blake Countess. That was the cheap one, he only had $15 on it. The one on the left however, is the one and only, Desmond Howard. He had $50 on that one. I was going to put it on credit and pay it later. He told me when he purchased them, he got such a good deal that I could just have the helmets for all the sorting I do. I told him I'd pay for them and he knows that but he said, it's fine, keep them. Sweet!
